Abstract :
Critical report on the conference, The origins of the avant-garde in America, 1923-1949: the Philip Johnson Colloquium, held at the Museum of Modern Art 1-3 Feb 1996, sponsored by the Museum and by the Graduate School of Architecture of Columbia University (New York), and organized by the Canadian Center for Architecture (Montreal). Participants included Phyllis Lambert, Peter Eisenman, and Colin Rowe; the focus was on Philip Johnson's contribution to American avant-garde architecture. Observes that Rowe's seemingly spontaneous remarks shaped the reception of subsequent panels; and asserts that his statement was a question not of there being an avant-garde, but of there being generals; and pursues the war analogy, citing Clausewitz. ;
