Abstract :
Analysis of education reform in Germany under Wilhelm II, which was intended to inculcate a modern and nationalist spirit into young Germans in place of the traditional reverence for antiquity. Focuses on art education, pointing to the conjunction between a professional crisis in the arts and a dynamic of reform in educational institutions; notes that the visual arts were treated differently than the other professional curricula; also considers the impact of new market forces on artists and institutions, as well as the influence of official cultural policy and the narrow aesthetic views of the emperor, who favored outmoded forms in art despite his call for modernization. ;
