Abstract :
Reconstructs the artistic personality and oeuvre of the 15th c. illuminator mistakenly identified as Michele da Carrara in D'Ancona and Aeschlimann's Dictionnaire des miniaturistes. Argues that he was a Franco-Flemish artist who settled first in Ferrara and was active in Rome from 1463-1485; identifies a group of manuscripts in the Biblioteca medicea-laurenziana, Florence, executed by him for Sozino Benzi; comments on his works for Sixtus IV and Innocent VIII; and notes the frequency and variety of his depictions of studioli. Includes an appendix listing 27 manuscripts with illuminations attributed to him, with their dates, locations and patrons' names, as well as authors of attributions and bibliographic references. ;
