Abstract :
Demonstrates the cultural interest in, and responses to, intellectual ideas (both ancient and modern), emanating from Italy which inspired early Tudor usage of terracotta for sculptural purposes, examining three case-studies : a series of portrait busts modelled by Pietro Torrigiano around 1509-1512; a series of roundels representing Roman emperors used as architectural decoration in about 1521; and the decoratively rich architectural ornamentation of two early Tudor country houses and some East Anglian tombs of the 1520s and 1530s. Each raise somewhat different questions about terracotta technique, the material and its sculptural potential, and the possible meanings or resonances of its use. ;
