Abstract :
Seeks to reconstruct the original appearance of the ciborium by Arnolfo di Cambio, completed in 1293, in S. Cecilia in Trastevere, Rome. Argues that the equestrian figure of S. Valeriano now on the back was originally located on the front righthand corner, and that the arch with the Wise Virgins may have been on the front as well. Points out that the patron of the ciborium and the frescoes by Cavallini is unlikely to have been Martin IV, who died before the decorations in S. Cecilia were begun; proposes that these were a Benedictine commission, possibly supported by the titular cardinal Jean Cholet; and observes that the works in S. Cecilia were modeled on the ciboriumame artists in S. Paolo fuori le Mura (Rome), also a Benedictine church. ;
