Abstract :
Briefly considers the nature and extent of the influence from France in two prosperous regions, England and the Rhineland, in the second half of the 12th c., and the process of its assimiliation into existing local traditions. Examines the historiographical problems of taxonomy that have been encountered when the architecture of these two regions in this period has been considered in traditional accounts of Gothic architecture. Concludes that the problem of the lack of stylistic consistency should be seen in context of the aspirations of patrons and masons, and identification of the relative significance of particular architectural features. ;
