Abstract :
Casid is interested in the connections which may be drawn between the formal structure and scripting of Marie-Antoinette's ornamented farm at Versailles and its satiric counter-figurations. Through a consideration of several of the queen's own commissioned views of the Hameau (1786), a few of the satiric prints produced concurrently with the Hameau's construction (1783-1786), and a number of those prints produced by the revolutionary press (1789-1793), georgic discourse and material practice may be revealed as inherently unstable. Viewing these images against the grain, one may see how Marie-Antoinette's supposed frivolousness or unproductiveness, purported perversity or production of pleasure, and maternity or re-productivity share the same ground, the queen's ornamented farm. Casid aims ultimately at a strategic rereading of Marie-Antoinette's Hameau and its counter constructions which will expose, complicate and potentially undo the constraints of the georgic formulation of farm-family-nation. ;
