Abstract :
Over the last three decades, Arakawa and Madeline Gins have created a body of work that bridges disciplines and seeks to expand the definition of artistic practice. This volume, published on the occasion of an exhibition, features two collaborations, The Mechanism of Meaning (83 mixed-media panels, 1963-1973), and their 'reversible destiny' projects begun in 1971. Their often conceptual art explores a range of perspectives from biology to cognitive science and employs such diverse mediums as drawing, painting, sculpture, poetry, architecture and city planning. Their reversible destiny architecture is conceived as real estate available for purchase in a postutopian future. Book includes artist sections with texts by Arakawa and Gins; essays by scholars from a wide range of disciplines; a comprehensive selection of designs for reversible destiny constructions; and documentation of two completed architectural projects. Essay authors: Charles W. Haxthausen, F. L. Rush, George Lakoff, Mark C. Taylor, Andrew Benjamin, Radovan Ivsic and Annie Le Brun, Bernhard Waldenfels, Ed Keller, Johannes Knesl, Greg Lynn, and Jesse Reiser. ;
